See the spectacular tall ship, Picton Castle, at Ipswich Waterfront from September 5th
You can take a tour of this magnificent working tall ship in Ipswich whilst she's berthed at the Waterfront.
Based in Lunenburg in Nova Scotia, Canada, the square rigger has just completed a 2,800mile voyage and will be in Ipswich as part of a ten-month tour of ports in Europe, Africa and the West Indies.
Built in 1928, the ship was originally a motorised trawler. She was used by the Royal Navy as a minesweeper during the Second World War but later became a freighter.
After falling into a state of disrepair, she was found in Norway and refurbished by her current captain Dan Moreland in the early 1990s and was brought to Ipswich on the way to Canada, where she was refitted and converted to sail.
Picton Castle is due to sail up the river Orwell on Friday, September 5. She will be open to the public between September 6 and September 9, before leaving for her next destination on September 10th.

Heritage Open Days in Debenham September 13 and 14 2008
Debenham is once again a star attraction of the Heritage Open Days weekend. With five properties in the heart of the village opening, and four of them listed Grade II*, it outshines other East Anglian villages and many towns. As Lesley Grant-Adamson, Heritage Open Days organiser for the Debenham Society, says, “What makes Debenham special is that we are showing private houses. Our only commercial building is the village landmark, the Market Cross, now an architect’s office. ”
The five properties welcoming visitors this year when Debenham takes part for the fourth time in the international Heritage Open Days scheme, on September 13 and 14, are:
The Red Lion, High Street. Former public house, Grade II* listed. 15th century brewhouse, jettied with dragon post. 16th century fine plaster ceiling. Owners will give tours of the building. Sat and Sun 10.30-16.00.
The Market Cross, Gracechurch Street. Grade II* listed 17th century market cross building used as schoolroom from 1630. Interesting plaster ceiling. Sat and Sun 10.30-13.00 and 14.00 -16.00.
The Old House, 23 High Street. Grade 11* listed mid 15th century house, probably the biggest medieval house in Debenham. Owners will show the parlour and its fine 17th century plasterwork ceiling.
37 High Street. Grade II* listed 16th century jettied timber-framed house. Renaissance wall painting in the main room. Sat and Sun 10.30-13.00 & 14.00-16.00.
Debenham House, 52 Aspal Road. Grade 11 listed, 16th century yeoman farmhouse, unusual features include prayer text on bressamer beam.
There will be a display at the Information Centre in the Long Room at the Red Lion where visitors collect leaflets before heading for the other properties where owners will share their knowledge and enthusiasm for their very special buildings.
The scheme, started by the Civic Trust in 1994, celebrates architecture and culture by giving the public free access to interesting properties that are either not usually open or else would normally charge an entrance fee.
The Debenham Society, affiliated to the Civic Trust, organises the local event. Contact Lesley Grant-Adamson on 01728 861601 or email lesley@crimefiction.co.uk

MICKY SALBERG’S CRYSTAL BALLROOM DANCE BAND
At The Jubilee Hall, Aldeburgh on Thursday 2 and Friday 3 October at 7.30pm
The Watermill West Berkshire Playhouse On Tour
The show first went on tour earlier this year and to say it received an overwhelmingly positive response is to underestimate its success. The theatre has been inundated with letters and emails saying how wonderful the show is and some audience members have even said it is the best theatre production they have seen. The show, which tours to over 20 venues following a run at The Watermill, comes to The Jubilee Hall, Aldeburgh on Thursday 2 and Friday 3 October at 7.30pm for two performances only.
This is the first time that The Watermill has taken an actor/musician show out on the road and audiences can expect fabulous live music in MICKY SALBERG’S CRYSTAL BALLROOM DANCE BAND. This type of Watermill show, which has won numerous awards on both sides of the Atlantic for The Watermill, appeals to everyone regardless of age.
It’s the early 50’s and life is tough on the farm. The bailiffs expected at any moment. But feisty no-nonsense Sam is trying to save her father’s livelihood. With little prospect of earning money from the land, they decide to form a Ballroom Dance Band, with just two members. Enter the ever-confident, guitar-wielding Tommy. He fervently believes that rock and roll is the way forward but Micky is unconvinced. And Sam? Well she just hates Tommy. The conflict of musical styles and relationships brings surprising revelations and new challenges to them all.
The writer is Ade Morris whose heart-warming comedies GIGOLO and THE STORY OF A GREAT LADY were both revived for a second run and tour.
This new musical comedy, examining the moment big band music met rock ‘n’ roll, will feature three actors. Pam Jolley has toured Europe, U.S.A., Canada and Mexico as the lead singer in RIVERDANCE and played Liz in the UK tour of BLONDE BOMBSHELLS OF 1943; Paul Kissaun’s work as a composer includes premier productions of Jim Cartwright’s EIGHT MILES HIGH, Alan Bennett's WIND IN THE WILLOWS for The National Theatre and the second world tour of AS YOU LIKE IT for Cheek By Jowl. He played Prospero in 2007 production of RETURN TO THE FORBIDDEN PLANET at Oldham; Alex Tompkins’ work includes working with Martin Duncan on MAN FROM LA MANCHA.

What's on Suffolk in October

First Woodbridge Children's Book Festival October 24-26th.
Booking opens on 1 September---
Carnegie prize winner, Philip Reeve, and shortlisted authors Kevin Crossley-Holland and Meg Rosoff will headline the first Woodbridge Children's Book Festival taking place on 24-26 October 2008.
Organised by the Woodbridge Town Centre Management Committee with the support of local businesses, schools and library service, the festival will take place at venues throughout this riverside Suffolk town.
There will be sessions for children of all ages including a Gruffalo activity cave, dog-walking by the river with Annette Butterworth and her good, bad dog Jake, and the launch of Crossley-Hollands' new story Waterslain Angels in the town church. Nick Butterworth will talk about his hugely successful career and share some of his favourite stories. Joyce Dunbar will launch her new book, The Monster Who Ate Darkness, and Lizzie Finlay will give an exclusive sneak preview of her first picture book, Dandylion. Alan Gibbons will share some secrets in writing horror stories and there will be a spy school with Gary Murray, the author of Venom Rising from local publisher, Top That. There will be creative writing and illustration workshops, a family cooking demonstration by a tv chef, storytelling trail around the town, and the world's only stand-up comedian for children, James Campbell - it's wide ranging and ambitious.
Woodbridge is just an hour and a half drive from London on the A12, near to the popular coastal towns of Aldeburgh and Southwold.
